Weatherboard Repair Services

From single board replacements to full wall re-cladding. Every repair matched to your existing boards and finished properly.

Rot Repair & Board Replacement

Rotten boards cut out and replaced with matching profiles. I address the moisture source too, so the new timber doesn't rot the same way.

Crack & Split Repairs

Hairline cracks filled and sealed. Deep splits and checks repaired with timber filler or board replacement depending on severity. Finished to match surrounding boards.

Warping & Bowing Fixes

Boards that have cupped, bowed, or pulled away from the frame. Re-fixed, replaced, or shimmed back into position depending on the cause and severity.

Termite Damage Repair

Boards hollowed out by termites replaced with treated timber. I check the framing behind the cladding too, because if termites got to the boards, they probably got further.

Heritage Weatherboard Work

Byron Bay and Bangalow's beautiful old homes deserve careful repair work. Profile matching, appropriate species, and respect for the building's original character.

Painting After Repairs

New boards properly primed, undercoated, and top-coated to match existing paintwork. Spot painting repaired sections or full wall repaints as needed.

The Complete Guide to Weatherboard Repairs in Byron Bay

Weatherboard homes are one of the things that give Byron Bay, Bangalow, Mullumbimby, and the broader Northern Rivers their character. From old Queenslanders and federation cottages to mid-century timber homes, weatherboard cladding has been the go-to for generations of builders in this region. And for good reason - it looks beautiful, it breathes well in humid climates, and when maintained properly, it lasts for decades.

The problem is that maintenance part. The Northern Rivers climate is tough on weatherboards. High humidity causes boards to swell and shrink cyclically. Salt air from the coast degrades timber and paint. Heavy rainfall drives moisture into joints and end grain. UV radiation breaks down surface coatings. And termites see weatherboard homes as an invitation to dinner.

I'm Dan, and I've been repairing weatherboards across the Northern Rivers for years. From quick single-board replacements to full heritage restoration work, I know what Byron Bay weatherboards need and how to fix them properly so the repair lasts.

Common Weatherboard Problems in the Northern Rivers

Rot - The Number One Issue

Timber rot is far and away the most common weatherboard problem I see across Byron Bay, Bangalow, Mullumbimby, and Lismore. The Northern Rivers provides perfect conditions for the fungi that cause rot - warmth, moisture, and plenty of timber to feed on.

Rot in weatherboards usually starts at the bottom course where boards are closest to the ground and get splash-back from rain. It also develops around windows and doors where water can sit in joints, at board ends where end grain is exposed, behind downpipes where overflows cause persistent dampness, and on the south-facing side where boards stay damp longest after rain.

The sneaky thing about rot is that it often starts behind the paint. The board looks fine from the outside, but when you push on it or tap it, it's soft underneath. If you've noticed paint bubbling or peeling on your weatherboards, that's often a sign that moisture has gotten behind the coating and rot is developing.

My approach to rot repair is straightforward. I assess the extent of the damage - sometimes what looks like one rotten board actually involves several. I cut out the damaged section back to sound timber. I check the framing behind the cladding because if water was getting to the boards, it may have reached the studs too. I install new timber that matches the existing profile, properly primed and sealed on all surfaces including the back face and end grain. And I address whatever was allowing moisture to get to the timber in the first place - fixing gutters, adjusting ground levels, improving drainage, or sealing joints.

Cracking and Splitting

Weatherboards crack for a few reasons. Timber naturally develops checks and splits as it ages and goes through repeated wet/dry cycles. Poor quality timber or insufficient seasoning before installation makes this worse. And in the Northern Rivers, the dramatic humidity swings between wet and dry seasons cause more movement than timber in more temperate climates.

Small hairline cracks can usually be filled with a quality exterior timber filler, sanded smooth, and painted over. Deeper splits that go through the board need more attention. If the split has opened up significantly, the board might need replacing because filler won't hold long-term in a deep crack that continues to move with the seasons.

For boards with multiple cracks or extensive checking, replacement is usually the better investment. A heavily cracked board lets moisture in at every fissure, and no amount of filler will fix that long-term. Better to replace it with a sound board that'll give you another 20-30 years of service.

Warping and Bowing

Warped weatherboards are boards that have cupped, bowed, or pulled away from the building frame. This happens when one face of the board absorbs moisture at a different rate from the other. Usually it's because the back face (against the building) has gotten wet while the front face (with paint) has stayed relatively dry, or vice versa.

Mildly warped boards can sometimes be re-fixed with additional fixings to pull them back flat. Heavily warped boards that have been bowed for a long time usually can't be forced flat without splitting, so they need replacing. The key is working out why the warping happened and fixing that cause, otherwise the replacement boards will warp too.

Paint Failure on Weatherboards

Paint failure is both a symptom and a cause of weatherboard problems. When paint peels, cracks, or bubbles, it exposes the timber underneath to moisture, UV, and weather. This accelerates timber deterioration, which in turn causes more paint failure. It's a cycle that gets worse if you don't break it.

Common causes of paint failure on Northern Rivers weatherboards include moisture getting behind the paint film from the back or through joints. UV degradation on exposed faces, especially north and west-facing walls. Paint applied over damp timber that then tries to dry out. Insufficient preparation before painting, meaning the new paint doesn't adhere properly. And low-quality paint that doesn't have the flexibility to cope with timber movement.

When I repair weatherboards, I always ensure the repaired section is properly painted as part of the job. New timber gets a quality primer on all surfaces before installation. Then undercoat and two top coats on the exposed face. I use flexible exterior paints that can cope with the movement that Northern Rivers timber experiences through the seasons. Cutting corners on paint is a false economy - a good paint system extends the life of the timber repair by years.

Termite Damage to Weatherboards

Termites in weatherboards are a serious concern across the Northern Rivers. Subterranean termites access weatherboard cladding from the ground level and can eat their way up through multiple courses before you notice anything wrong on the surface. By the time the damage is visible, the boards are often completely hollowed out.

If you suspect termite damage in your weatherboards - soft spots, hollow-sounding boards when tapped, visible mud tubes on the foundation - the first step is getting a pest controller in to treat the infestation. There's no point replacing damaged boards while the termites are still active.

Once the termites are confirmed gone, I assess the full extent of the damage. This means removing some boards to inspect the framing behind them. Termites that have gotten into the cladding have almost certainly gotten into the studs, noggings, and potentially the structural frame. I replace all damaged timber with treated alternatives to reduce the risk of future attack, and I make sure there are no easy pathways for termites to access the cladding again.

Weatherboard Repair Techniques

Timber Filler for Minor Damage

For small dents, minor cracks, old nail holes, and surface damage, exterior-grade timber filler is an effective and economical repair. I use two-part epoxy fillers for any repairs that need to withstand structural loads or moisture exposure, and flexible acrylic fillers for purely cosmetic repairs that just need to look good under paint.

The key with filler is preparation. The area needs to be clean, dry, and free of loose material. For rot damage, I consolidate the surrounding timber with a liquid hardener before applying filler, so the filler has something solid to bond to. A filler repair over soft, punky timber will fail within a season.

Board Replacement

When boards are too damaged for filler, they need replacing. This is the most common repair I do on weatherboard homes across Byron Bay and the Northern Rivers. The process involves carefully removing the damaged board without disturbing the boards above and below. Checking the framing and building paper behind for any hidden damage. Cutting the new board to length with the same profile as the existing boards. Priming all surfaces of the new board including back face and end grain. Installing with stainless steel fixings, ensuring proper overlap and weathering. Caulking joints where needed. And painting to match the existing finish.

For older homes with non-standard profiles, I can source matching boards from specialist timber suppliers or have them custom milled. The goal is always an invisible repair - when I'm done, you shouldn't be able to spot which boards are new.

Section Re-Cladding

When a large area of weatherboard is damaged - typically more than 30-40% of a wall - it often makes more sense to re-clad that entire section rather than patching individual boards. Re-cladding gives you a consistent finish, lets me properly inspect and repair the framing and building paper behind the cladding, and often works out more economical per board than doing lots of individual replacements.

I re-clad sections using boards that match the existing profile and species. If the entire house needs re-cladding, that's a bigger project that might be better handled by a builder. But for individual walls or sections, I can handle it efficiently and the result is essentially a brand new wall that matches the rest of the house.

Heritage Weatherboard Homes in Byron Bay and Bangalow

The Northern Rivers has some genuinely beautiful heritage weatherboard homes. Bangalow in particular has a concentration of lovely old timber houses that date back to the early 1900s. Byron Bay, Mullumbimby, and Lismore all have their share too. These homes have character and charm that modern construction just can't replicate.

Working on heritage weatherboard homes requires a different approach from working on a 1980s house. The timber profiles are often specific to the era and region. The fixing methods were different. The timber species might be something that's not commonly available today. And if the property is heritage-listed, there may be council requirements about how repairs are carried out.

For heritage work, I source matching timber profiles wherever possible. If the exact profile isn't available off the shelf, I can have it custom milled to match. I use appropriate fixing methods for the era of the building, and I take care to maintain the visual character of the cladding. Quick and cheap is not the approach for heritage homes - careful and correct is what these buildings deserve.

Heritage-listed properties under Byron Shire Council or Lismore City Council may require consent for exterior work, even repairs. Like-for-like maintenance using matching materials generally doesn't need approval, but if there's any doubt, it's worth checking with council before starting. I'll let you know if I think your job might need sign-off.

Painting After Weatherboard Repairs

Paint is your weatherboard's first line of defence against the elements, and getting it right after repairs is just as important as the timber repair itself. I've seen perfectly good repair work fail within a couple of years because the painting wasn't done properly.

My painting process for weatherboard repairs starts before the board goes on the wall. Every new board gets a full coat of quality primer on all six surfaces - front, back, both edges, and both ends. The back face is especially important because it's the surface that never gets painted once the board is installed, and it's where moisture from the building can reach the timber.

Once installed, the board gets an undercoat and then two top coats of quality exterior acrylic paint. I match the existing colour as closely as possible. For spot repairs, I feather the new paint into the surrounding existing paint so the transition is invisible. If the surrounding paint is faded or chalky, I'll usually recommend painting the whole section between natural breaks (like corners or window frames) so the colour matches evenly.

For larger painting projects after extensive weatherboard repairs, I can handle the full repaint as well. It makes sense to do both at once - the scaffolding or ladder work is already set up, and you get a consistent finish across the whole wall.

Weatherboard Maintenance Schedule for Coastal Homes

Prevention is always cheaper than repair. Here's the maintenance schedule I recommend for weatherboard homes in the Byron Bay and Northern Rivers coastal area.

Recommended Maintenance Schedule

Every 6 months Walk around the house and visually inspect all weatherboard surfaces. Look for paint peeling, cracks developing, boards pulling away, or any soft spots. Catch problems early when they're cheap to fix.
Annually Do a thorough inspection including probing suspect areas with a screwdriver. Check behind downpipes, at ground level, around windows and doors, and on the weather-exposed side. Clear any vegetation touching the cladding.
Every 2-3 years Check and renew caulking around windows, doors, and board joints. Recaulk any gaps where water could penetrate. Touch up any paint damage before it allows moisture into the timber.
Every 5-7 years Full repaint of the exterior. On the coastal side, this might be needed every 4-5 years due to salt and UV exposure. A good repaint protects the timber for the next cycle and is far cheaper than replacing rotten boards.
Annually (pest) Annual termite inspection by a qualified pest controller. The Northern Rivers is high-risk for termites, and weatherboard homes are particularly vulnerable. Prevention is infinitely cheaper than termite damage repair.

Following this schedule won't prevent all weatherboard problems, but it will catch them early when they're cheap to fix and dramatically extend the life of your cladding. I can help with the timber maintenance items on this list as part of my general handyman services.

Weatherboard Repair FAQs

Common questions about weatherboard repairs from Byron Bay to Lismore homeowners

How much do weatherboard repairs cost?

Small patch repairs cost $200-$500. Board replacements run $80-$180 per linear metre. Section re-cladding is $120-$250 per sqm. I provide a fixed quote after assessing the damage so there are no surprises.

Can you match old weatherboard profiles?

Yes. Standard profiles are readily available, and unusual heritage profiles can be custom milled to match. The goal is always an invisible repair where you can't tell which boards are new.

Should I repair or replace my weatherboards?

If damage is limited to a few boards, repair is usually better. If more than 30-40% of a wall is damaged, re-cladding might make more sense. I'll give you an honest recommendation based on the overall condition.

Do weatherboard repairs need council approval?

Like-for-like repairs generally don't need approval. Changing cladding material or making structural changes might. Heritage-listed properties may need consent even for repairs. I'll flag any potential approval requirements.

How often should weatherboards be maintained?

Coastal homes need a visual inspection every 6 months, thorough inspection annually, recaulking every 2-3 years, and full repaint every 5-7 years. Annual termite inspections are essential in the Northern Rivers.

Can you paint after repairs?

Yes, painting is included in my weatherboard repair service. New boards are primed on all surfaces, then undercoated and top-coated to match existing paintwork. Full wall repaints available too.
