Need Your Locks Replaced?

Whether you're moving into a new home, upgrading your security, or dealing with a lock that's given up the ghost, I can help.

I'm Dan from GoodHands Handyman, and I replace door locks right across the Northern Rivers - from Byron Bay down to Tweed Heads, Ballina to Lismore, and everywhere in between. Lock replacement is one of those jobs that people put off because it doesn't seem urgent, but it's actually one of the most important things you can do for your home security.

Think about it - your locks are the primary barrier between your family and belongings and the outside world. If they're worn, corroded, stiff, or outdated, they're not doing their job properly. And if you've recently moved into a property, you genuinely have no idea how many copies of your keys are out there. Previous owners, their relatives, old cleaners, tradespeople, real estate agents - any of them could still have a key to your front door.

I replace all types of door locks including deadbolts, mortice locks, screen door locks, sliding door locks, and modern smart locks. I supply quality products from brands you can trust, and I make sure every lock is fitted properly so it works smoothly and provides the security you're paying for. A lock that's poorly fitted is barely better than no lock at all.

Lock replacement goes hand-in-hand with other door work I do across the Northern Rivers. If your door is sticking, warped, or damaged, I can fix the door and replace the lock in the same visit. Check out my door repair pages for Byron Bay, Ballina and Lismore, and Tweed Heads.

When to Replace vs Repair Your Locks

Sometimes a repair will do the job, but often replacement is the smarter move

Signs You Need Lock Replacement

Not every lock problem needs a full replacement. But there are clear signs that it's time for new locks rather than trying to nurse the old ones along:

  • The lock is visibly corroded or pitted from salt air
  • The key is getting harder to turn, even with lubrication
  • The lock mechanism feels loose or wobbly in the door
  • You can see daylight around the lock body or strike plate
  • The deadbolt doesn't extend fully into the frame
  • You've moved into a new property and don't know who has keys
  • The lock is an older style that doesn't meet current security standards
  • There's been an attempted break-in and the lock is damaged

When Repair Might Be Enough

Sometimes a lock just needs some attention rather than full replacement. I'll always be honest about whether a repair will do the job:

  • The lock is stiff but responds well to cleaning and lubrication
  • The strike plate just needs repositioning
  • The door has shifted slightly and the lock needs minor adjustment
  • A single component like a spring or cylinder can be replaced
  • The lock is good quality and relatively new, just needs servicing

If a repair will genuinely solve the problem and last a reasonable time, I'll recommend that over replacement. I'd rather save you money with an honest repair than sell you a lock you don't need. But I'll also be upfront if I think a repair is just putting off the inevitable.

Types of Locks I Replace

From traditional deadbolts to modern smart locks, I handle the lot

Deadbolt Locks

Deadbolts are the backbone of home security and the most common lock type I replace across the Northern Rivers. A quality deadbolt properly fitted into a solid door and frame is one of the best deterrents against break-ins. I supply and fit single-cylinder and double-cylinder deadbolts from trusted Australian brands.

In our coastal environment around Byron Bay, Lennox Head and Kingscliff, deadbolts corrode faster than they should. The salt air gets into the mechanism and gradually seizes it up. If your deadbolt is getting harder to turn, that's usually corrosion working its way into the cylinder. I fit deadbolts with marine-grade or stainless steel components for coastal properties to extend their lifespan significantly.

Typical cost: $150-$250 supplied and fitted, depending on the lock brand and whether the door needs any preparation work.

Mortice Locks

Mortice locks are the type that sit inside the door rather than being mounted on the surface. They're common in older homes across Lismore, Ballina and the wider Northern Rivers, and they're also used on many newer doors where a cleaner look is preferred. The advantage of a mortice lock is that it's integrated into the door, making it harder to tamper with from outside.

Replacing a mortice lock is more involved than swapping a deadbolt because the lock body sits inside a mortice (pocket) cut into the door. The new lock needs to fit the existing mortice, or the mortice needs to be modified. I'm experienced with both scenarios and can usually find a direct replacement or adapt the mortice to fit a modern lock.

For older homes in Lismore and Ballina with original mortice locks, I can often source modern locks that fit the same cutout so you don't need to modify the door. This preserves the door's integrity and character while giving you modern security.

Typical cost: $200-$400 supplied and fitted, depending on lock type and whether mortice modification is needed.

Screen Door Locks

Screen door locks are often the weakest link in home security across the Northern Rivers. Many people lock their screen door and leave the main door open for ventilation, which means the screen door lock is the only thing between them and the outside. If that lock is a flimsy little latch that you can pop with a credit card, it's not exactly providing peace of mind.

I replace screen door locks with quality options that actually provide security. For hinged screen doors, I fit proper deadlatch mechanisms. For sliding screen doors, I fit barrel locks or pin locks that prevent the door from being lifted off the track or forced open. The upgrade from a cheap screen door lock to a quality one is usually under $150 and it's worth every cent.

  • Hinged screen door deadlatches
  • Sliding screen door barrel locks
  • Security screen door multi-point locks
  • Screen door handles and latch sets

Sliding Door Locks

Sliding glass doors are everywhere in Northern Rivers homes, and the standard locks that come with them are often inadequate for security. The basic snib lock on most sliding doors can be bypassed relatively easily, which is why I always recommend adding a secondary lock.

I fit a range of sliding door security options including keyed locks that bolt the door to the frame, foot-operated deadlocks, and track locks that prevent the door from being slid open even if the primary lock is defeated. For homes close to the beach in Byron Bay, Suffolk Park, or Kingscliff, I use corrosion-resistant hardware that stands up to the salt air.

  • Keyed sliding door locks
  • Patio bolt locks
  • Track-mounted security locks
  • Anti-lift devices to prevent door removal
  • Multi-point locking system upgrades

Smart Locks

Smart locks are becoming increasingly popular across the Northern Rivers, especially for Airbnb properties in Byron Bay where owners need to give temporary access to guests without physical keys. But they're also great for everyday use - no more fumbling for keys with your hands full of shopping.

I install several types of smart locks including keypad locks where you punch in a code, fingerprint locks, Bluetooth locks that open from your phone, and WiFi-connected locks you can control remotely. Most retrofit into existing deadbolt preparations with minimal door modification.

Smart locks are particularly useful for:

  • Airbnb and holiday rental properties
  • Families who are always losing keys
  • Elderly residents who find keys difficult
  • Investment properties where you need remote access control
  • Businesses that need audit trails of who entered when

I'll help you choose the right smart lock for your needs and budget, install it properly, and make sure you know how to use all its features. I also make sure there's always a manual key backup in case the battery dies or the electronics have an issue - technology is great until it isn't.

Typical cost: $300-$500 supplied and fitted, depending on the brand and features.

Commercial and Specialty Locks

For businesses and commercial properties across the Northern Rivers, I handle a range of specialty lock types including:

  • Commercial-grade deadbolts for shop fronts
  • Keyed-alike systems where one key opens multiple doors
  • Master key systems for property managers
  • Restricted key systems that can't be copied without authorisation
  • Storeroom locks with auto-locking function
  • Panic hardware for fire exit doors

If you need a lock solution for a commercial property, office, or multi-tenancy building, give me a call and we'll work out the best option for your situation. I can also set up keyed-alike systems for property managers who want a single master key to access all their properties.

Lock Replacement After Moving Into a New Property

One of the smartest things you can do when you move into a new home

Every time I help someone move into a new property in Byron Bay, Ballina, Lismore or anywhere in the Northern Rivers, I have the same conversation: have you thought about changing the locks? Most people haven't, or they've thought about it but haven't got around to it yet.

Here's the thing - when you buy or rent a new property, you get the keys that the previous occupant hands over. But you have absolutely no idea how many other copies of those keys exist. The previous owner might have given copies to family members, neighbours, house sitters, cleaners, dog walkers, tradespeople, or friends. The real estate agent probably has copies. If the property was previously rented, previous tenants may still have keys. That's potentially a dozen or more people who can walk into your home.

Replacing or rekeying the locks is a quick and relatively inexpensive way to guarantee that only you and the people you choose have access to your home. I can usually do a full house rekey or lock replacement in a couple of hours, and I'll provide you with a fresh set of keys that nobody else has copies of.

What I Recommend for New Property Owners

  • Replace or rekey all exterior door locks including front, back, side and garage entry
  • Check and replace screen door and security door locks
  • Upgrade sliding door locks if the existing ones are basic latches
  • Consider a smart lock for the front door for keyless convenience
  • Check window locks while we're at it - they're often overlooked

If you've just bought or are about to move into a property in the Northern Rivers, give me a call and I'll come out and assess your locks. I can usually do the whole job on the same day, so you can sleep easy from your very first night in the new place. I also do a general move-in property check if you want a thorough look at everything, not just the locks.

Lock Upgrades for Rental Properties

Working with property managers and landlords across the Northern Rivers

I work with property managers and landlords all across the Northern Rivers for lock-related work. Rental properties have specific requirements around locks and keys in NSW, and I make sure everything is done properly and documented.

Under NSW tenancy law, landlords must provide secure locks on all external doors and windows, and tenants must be given working keys to all locks. If a tenant requests a lock change at the start of a new tenancy, the landlord must arrange it within a reasonable timeframe (the tenant pays for this). Between tenancies, it's best practice to at least rekey the locks, even though it's not strictly required by law.

Services for Property Managers

Between-Tenancy Lock Service

  • Rekey or replace all exterior locks
  • Check and service screen door locks
  • Test all sliding door locks
  • Provide full set of new keys
  • Document all locks for property records
  • Same-day service available

Ongoing Lock Maintenance

  • Emergency lock repairs for tenants
  • Lock replacements when reported faulty
  • Security upgrades on request
  • Airbnb lock management and key safes
  • Master key systems for portfolio managers
  • Proper invoicing and documentation

For property managers with multiple properties, I can set up keyed-alike systems so you have one key that opens all your managed properties. This saves an enormous amount of hassle compared to carrying around a ring of thirty different keys. I can also set up restricted key systems where keys can only be cut by authorised suppliers, preventing tenants from making unauthorised copies.

Emergency Lock Replacement

When you need your locks sorted urgently, I prioritise the job

Some lock situations can't wait. If your home has been broken into, if your lock has been damaged in a break-in attempt, if your key has snapped off inside the lock, or if a relationship breakdown means you need to secure your property quickly, I offer priority lock replacement service across the Northern Rivers.

For emergency lock work, I carry a range of common lock types in the van so I can usually replace your locks on the spot rather than having to order parts and come back another day. I aim to get to emergency jobs within 24 hours, and often much sooner depending on where you are and what's in my schedule.

Emergency Situations I Handle

  • Lock damage from break-in or attempted break-in
  • Broken key stuck in the lock mechanism
  • Lock seized and door cannot be secured
  • Security concern requiring immediate lock change
  • Storm damage to door affecting lock function
  • Rental property lock emergencies for property managers

I'm not a locksmith - I'm a handyman who replaces locks. If you're locked out of your home and need someone to pick the lock or gain non-destructive entry, you'll need to call a locksmith. But if you need a lock replaced, upgraded, or repaired, that's exactly what I do. And if the door itself needs repair work alongside the lock replacement, I can handle both in one visit rather than you needing to call two different tradies. For broader emergency help, see my emergency door repair page.
